Music at Chilcote
At Chilcote Primary school, we have a long tradition of enabling children to learn to play a musical instrument either as an individual, in a small group or as a whole class. All children are given the opportunity to have subsidised instrument lessons on the violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, dhol drum, cornet, trumpet, french horn, euphonium or trombone and are loaned a free instrument from the Birmingham Music Service to play throughout their years at Chilcote.
All children learn to play the descant recorder during their Year 3 music curriculum and the keyboard during the Year 4 music curriculum.
For many years now, we have had a very successful orchestra (comprising our more experienced string, brass, guitar, recorder and percussion players); a string quartet and a recorder group for Year 4,5 and 6 children.
Some children also play in `Birmingham Schools `Area instrumental groups ` and `Birmingham Schools` Ensembles` after school or on Saturdays and participate in concerts at the Conservatoire of Music in Birmingham or at other local concert venues.
Additionally, we have two thriving and inclusive choirs-Infant choir-open to children in Year 1 and 2 and Junior Choir for children in years 3,4,5 and 6. Both perform at school concerts and Junior Choir also regularly take part in concerts at St Peter`s church, Solihull school and visit local Residential homes and community areas to sing. Junior Choir have also participated in `Young Voices ` at the NEC for many years and the` Primary Gala Choir` at Symphony hall for the last four years.
