How we meet the Public Sector Equality Duty 2023-2024

The teaching of the Protected Characteristics at Chilcote Primary School is mainly through PSHE lessons and is further embedded through the curriculum and the culture of reading that the school has adopted.

Chilcote follows the statutory guidance for RHSE and uses planning and resources recommended by and produced by the PSHE Association. Sex, race, religion and disability are represented well through the resources that are used throughout the school and civil partnership and marriage are represented in an age-appropriate way in the relevant units. There are particular units where the Protected Characteristics are more of a focus, taught explicitly, and not just represented through the resources:

• Year 1 ‘Who is special to us?’ equal representation of sexual orientation through family make-up
• Year 2 ‘What jobs people do?’ emphasizes that sex is not a factor in job selection
• Year 3 ‘What are families like?’ ensures equal representation of sexual orientation and marriage/civil partnerships through make-up of different families
• Year 3 'What makes a community?' emphasizes the multicultural nature of Britain and discusses diversity
• Year 5 unit 'What makes up a person's identity?' teaches about the Equality Act, identity and sexual orientation
• Year 5 'What jobs would we like?' recaps that race, religion, sex, disability should not affect the job you have

The Chilcote Reading Canon and Supplementary Texts demonstrate, through the authors and the subject matter, a good representation of the Protected characteristics. Having a protected characteristic represented by the author or subject matter can allow for discussions around this protected characteristic to take place in the context of their other learning, as well as this characteristic being visible and represented to the children.

The Protected Characteristics are further embedded in our teaching through other areas of the curriculum, including the UN Articles, Religious Education and other non-core subjects. Some examples of these are below:

• Year 2 – Spring – History – The lives of significant people – people of different race, sex and religion represented.
• Year 4 – Autumn – English, Geography and History – Black History Month link – race represented.
• Year 6 - throughout the year look at significant people: Martin Luther King, Venus sisters, Muhammad Ali, Frederick Douglass, Greta Thunberg, Billie Jean King, Elton John- age, sex, race, sexual orientation, religion all represented
